IBS#3 – Sin and The Curse

IBS#3 – Sin and The Curse

Lesson #3

IBS#3 – Sin and The Curse

Read Genesis 3

The existence of Satan is taught in 7 OT books and by every NT writer, and by Christ (Matt 13:39, Lk 10:18, 11:18).

God created everything good; evil is the corruption of good like darkness is the absence of light and cancer is the corruption of healthy cells. Before the creation of man, Satan was created as an angel who became corrupted and rebelled against God because of pride.  Evil came as a result of God’s gift of free will to choose to obey or not.  The risk of free will is disobedience.

When Satan rebelled, bringing a third of the angelic host with him (Rev 12:4), God could have immediately crushed this insurrection, but He didn’t. Did this new rebel leader have the right to reign?  God will bring an even greater glory to Himself by using this rebellion to accomplish His purposes.

1.  Who is the Serpent? Rev 12:9, 20:2, Rev 12:3, 2 Cor 11:14

Where did he come from? Ezek 28:2-6,12-14; Isa 14:12-20

2.  Examine how the serpent persuaded Eve to eat the forbidden fruit with only one question, one contradiction, and one proposition.

a.  What is unusual about his question?  What was the point of asking such a question?  What specifically did he attack?  How does he continue to use this strategy today?

b.  How did the serpent contradict God?  What effect does this have on Eve that makes her vulnerable?  How is this strategy used today?

c.  What did the serpent propose to Eve?  What effect did this have on her?  Compare with 1 Jn 2:16.  When did the temptation become sin?  James 1:13-15.  Is temptation sin? Heb 4:15. How is this strategy employed today?

d.  Although Eve was the first to eat the forbidden fruit, it is recorded that sin entered the world through Adam (Rom 5:12,14, 1 Cor 15:22, 45).  According to 1 Tim 2:14, how does the New Testament differentiate the culpability of Eve from Adam?  What is the difference in responsibility and outcome for each?

3.  How does God reveal their sin to them?  What can we learn from this for how to treat our children when they have done something wrong?

4.  Because they both challenged God’s authority by disobeying His one prohibition, God brings forth great opposition in the form of Curses to the three parties.

a.  The serpent is the only one directly cursed.  How will life change for the serpent?  What is God’s first Messianic prophecy to “the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan” (Rev.20:2)?  How does Jesus uniquely fulfill the reference to “her seed”?  See Matt 1:23 & 25; Luke 1:27 & 34.

b.  While Eve is not directly cursed, let’s examine the consequences of Eve’s sin upon women.

(1)  How is motherhood affected by Eve’s sin?

(2)  How is being a wife affected by Eve’s sin?

How does the use of the same word for “desire” in Gen.4:7 help to interpret the meaning of “your desire will be for your husband”?

c.  While Adam is not directly cursed, what are the consequences of Adam’s sin?

(1)  How is work affected?

(2)  How is his physical wellbeing affected?

(3)  How is the ground affected?

5.  What two provisions does God make for the new sinners?  What does it reveal about God?

Summary:

Eve was deceived by the serpent, and led Adam to disobey God – both ate the forbidden fruit. Their sin is passed on to all descendents of Adam (Rom 5:12), bringing cursed consequences to all.  The serpent is cursed to crawl on his belly and Satan is prophesied to temporarily harm the future Messiah, only to receive a fatal wound from Him.  The woman will experience pain in bringing forth children and desire to control her husband though he will rule over her.  The man will have to toil for his food as the cursed earth will no longer be cooperative, and opposition and frustration will plague the workplace.  And death overcomes every sinner, just as God had warned.  Yet there is a glimmer of hope even as Adam and Eve are expelled from the Garden of Eden.  God prevents them from eating the fruit that would make their curse eternal and covers them with an animal skin, drawing first blood as a provision for their new cursed state.
