Lesson #2

IBS #2 – Man and Woman Created in His Image

 Read Genesis – chapter 2

While Gen.1-2:4 gives an overview account of creation, the next section, Gen.2:5-25 goes back and zooms in on the specific creation of humans.

1.  What evidences from this creation account support the idea that man is the primary creation for the earth?

 2.  God specifically commands the man to withhold himself from only one thing in the creation.  What is it?  What does man’s obedience to this command signify?  What do you think the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is?  What is so devastating about eating from it?

a.  What is the difference between negative and positive commands?

 3. Everything God created is “very good” (Gen 1:31).  What in Gen 2:18 does God evaluate as the first thing that is “not good”?  Why is this “not good”?

 4.  What task (vv:19-20) does God give Adam before creating Eve?  How is God’s creation of the woman different from His previous creation of all other creatures of the feminine gender?

a.  What significance does creating Eve from Adam’s rib have? What makes a woman a “suitable helper”?

b.  What is the difference between Eve as “second-born” and Adam who was “first-born”? What ramifications could this have for their roles and functions?

Gen. 2:24 is a statement that is out of chronological sequence for Adam since he does not have parents to “leave,” but this gives the principles for marriage throughout time, as it is repeated later by Jesus (Matt 19:5 and Mark 10:9) and by Paul (Eph 5:31).

5.  What does it means for the man to “leave his father and his mother”?  How does not leaving his parents affect the wife and her relationships with him and their children?  How common is this view outside the Christian faith?  What should a believer do when Scripture conflicts with culture?

6.  What does it mean to “become one flesh”?  What does their being “both naked and not ashamed” tell us about God’s intended purpose for this new union?  How does God view marriage?  Heb 13:4.

Summary:

God created Adam first from the dust to become the leader, and later created Eve from Adam’s rib to be his suitable helper, to unite as one to carry out God’s mandate to multiply and rule the earth as His agents.  This most intimate one-flesh relationship is given priority over all other blood-relationships with parents or children.  It is to be held in honor as it was instituted by God to bring glory to Himself (Eph 5:31-32).

Created in God’s image, the man and woman together can display the sacrificial love of Christ and the loving submission of His Church.
